Someone recently berated me on checking "white" on an online profile. I'm sorry, what? Are Jews not white? Ashkenazi Jews? My great-grandparents are from Russia. Back and back and back, everyone is Jewish. Now... What was I supposed to check? I'm not being a supremecist here, I'm just white. Really farking pale white, too.

This is what it looked like:

Ethnicities?

Asian
0(0.0%)
Black
0(0.0%)
Indian
0(0.0%)
Hispanic/Latin
1(9.1%)
Middle Eastern
0(0.0%)
Native American
0(0.0%)
Pacific Islander
0(0.0%)
White
7(63.6%)
Undeclared
2(18.2%)
Other
1(9.1%)

you're white. Judaism isn't a race. That person doesn't know what they are talking about.

Speaking as an Ashkenazi, it's just as much a race as "Pacific Islander," but you don't ever see it on surveys. I always check "white" myself.

it depends on how you define "race." skin color? country of origin? clan? none of the race classifications are very specific if you think about it. It is subjective where you draw the line. This particular survey more than others. "Undeclared?" Why I declare, I just haven't chosen a race yet.

Judaism's a religion; but I'd argue that Ashkenazi could count as a race-kind-of-thing. There are specific genetic markers, susceptibility to specific diseases. But as you say, where do you draw the line? "White" could be Swedish or Italian or Ashkenazi or Irish. The categorization is pretty arbitrary.

However, the poll asked to identify ethnicity, not race.
Being a Jew is not being a member of a particular racial group.
But being a Jew is being a member of a particular ethnic group.

My main problem is that that question's options are combining race and ethnicity, and beyond that, excluding some ethnic groups.

Well, TECHNICALLY (ie, anthropologically), there is no such thing as race. There is only culture.

But if you're not White, then what are you? You certainly are not Black. And you're definitely not Asian. :P

Judaism is a religion, and it is a culture. But it is not a race (nor is anything else, for that matter, which I already explained above).

This sounds like week 3 of my Race and Minority Group Relations.

The problem with that table is that it's COMBINING race and ethnicity in the options, and then not including a whole bunch of options.

I consider myself white, American [both sides of the family have been here for 6 or 7 generations], Jew.
I guess I'd have checked White and Other.

If it helps, I'm still paler than you.

I got all kinds of comments like that when people walked up to order sushi and came in contact with a 290lb white guy with a beard.
