Sara and I went shopping earlier, and I found it really hard to not buy things. The cute $10 dress at Hot Topic, a small harry potter keychain, and tons of random stuff that honestly... I can live without. I wish I HAD tried to buy something earlier, though, because I would have noticed my check card gone, and it would have been less embarrassing than getting my haircut and then not having money. Thank goodness for Sara! Turns out I left my debit card at Video Warehouse last night. After looking through my car, my purse, my wallet (I have two, I hd been using the smaller one with my smaller purse but thought I had put it back) and my clothes, I called there, because I never remembered getting it back from there last night. I had rented Shawshank Redemption, and it was fabulous. I had always pegged it as a boy movie (and it was, sort of), but it was surprisingly good even by Melissa-chick-flick-standards. A little too much blood, but thats what your hands are for. To cover your eyes. ::nods::

I met a Muslim Jew today. A friend of my dad's. His name is Ed. He's probably about sixty, and he had on the BEST. HAT. EVER. (good story, huh)

That's my favorite movie. Way sad, but good. I always cry because the old man is sad when he gets out... The whole grocery store scene is so depressing to me.

Great movie, though.

What's a Muslim Jew?
Dec. 21st, 2005 01:49 am (UTC)
heck if I know. Apparently he's both Muslim and Jewish.

Weird. Baha'i, maybe? Some Black thing?
Dec. 21st, 2005 09:43 am (UTC)
nope. Muslim Jew-- in his words.
Dec. 21st, 2005 05:22 am (UTC)
Do you mean a Persian Jew? Jew from an Arab country? You can't be both, you just can't! Or maybe he was born Jewish and converted to Islam?
Dec. 21st, 2005 09:43 am (UTC)
no, I mean he calls himself a Muslim Jew
Dec. 21st, 2005 10:05 am (UTC)
Hmmph. He can't be Muslim and a Jew anymore than J4Js can be Christian and Jew at the same time. He's probably a Jew who converted to Islam. Well, ok - He's a sinning Jew. He could recant and go back to Judaism, but for the time being he's a heretic, and pretty much any rabbi would tell you the same.
Dec. 21st, 2005 10:06 am (UTC)
uh huh.

he doesn't care.

Ummm...a Muslim Jew?

A lot of Muslims don't like Jews at all, as in really don't. Is how it kind of seems...but maybe that's just a personal-failing sort of thing with some people, being bigoted and whatnot.

That's just confusing, a Muslim Jew. I don't claim it isn't so, I could hardly do that. Still.

There are more strange things than are dreamt of in my philosopy. Go figure.

he's an odd kind of guy. I just met him tonight. More as I learn it.

um.. who are you?
Dec. 21st, 2005 03:06 pm (UTC)
Who am I? I wonder that, myself, as I get older.

Nobody that you know. A grandfather, way outside of the usual LJ demographic. I'm used to that, but would understand if you found it unusual enough to bother. Not so much of a dirty old man. Fairly literate, of uncertain temperament. Like most I have great gaps, tattered holes, in the weave of my knowledge and a lot of the usual prejudices. Dislike of Jews is not one of those, my first-remembered friend was Jewish. Is Jewish, if he yet survives; they moved away, giving me an early life lesson about how things change.

I would sort of like to hear somewhat of this Muslim Jew. That's interesting, and maybe a bit more than interesting.

Okay, then... how did you find my journal?
Dec. 22nd, 2005 03:12 am (UTC)
um. Seems like I was reading 'lj maintenance' and the username caught my eye. I was reading replies...the thing is, I was wondering if they actually wade through all the pages of replies that can get generated when they post something. So it would sort of follow that one would read the replies to see what people were saying. But like most people I have a shortish attention span unless very focused, so I can't remember if I found out anything at all logical before I ended up browsing your journal. There I discovered a minor interest in Muslim Judaism.

Life is an endless procession of coincidence.

I don't know if I'd say I had a minor interest in Muslim Judaism. I myself am a Jew, and I found it odd that someone decided to combine these two religions.
Dec. 22nd, 2005 05:07 am (UTC)
Well, there's minor and then there's minor. I'm just a little curious about the juxtaposition of ideas.

But there's another thing about it: one realizes that there are a lot of background assumptions that one makes, and not so much real knowledge, in such a contrast. Then again: any exploration of religious ideas has to include cultural referents. One would think, quite a few of such.

yeah....the harry potter keychain in HotTopic? i bought it today
Dec. 21st, 2005 09:42 am (UTC)
ha! the one for 1.99?
Dec. 21st, 2005 06:21 pm (UTC)
yeah. the one with both ron and harry.
Dec. 21st, 2005 05:32 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's impossible. Mutally-exclusive. It's like being a Democrat and a Republican. To be Muslim, he'd have to believe in Jesus and Muhammed as God's Messengers, which I believe conflict with Judaism's beliefs. Of course, if he's refering to his way of life, rather than his beliefs, then it is entirely possible, as the two religions have many identical facets, especially regarding lifestyle and the like.
