Thoughts on Jewish childrens names

I think I want to name my children names that are obviously Jewish.

It cuts down on EVERYONE having your same name (a problem when you're named MELISSA)
It puts forth a strong and proud Jewish identity.
Hebrew and English names would be the same, and you wouldn't come across "Davida Emmanuela" (my sister's Hebrew name) type issues.

These are the ones that I like the most that I'm considering for my children.

Girls:
Chava
Shoshanna
Rivka
Shira
Aliyah
Aviva (too close to Aviyah?)

Boys:
Barak
Yair
Ariel (Ari?)
Eliezer (Eli, pronounced "EE-lye" not "EH-lee")
Elijah (Eli)

When I was 13, I wanted to name my first girl "Hannah Rebecca" and have her Hebrew name be "Chanah Rivka," but then my aunt stole it for her daughter, Anna. At this point I'd rather just name my child their Hebrew name in English, but unfortunately Chanah Rivka is still taken :(

So, I've always wondered. Is your mom's legal name Rochel or do people just call her by her Hebrew name?

My mom's legal name is Rochel. Up until she was five, she always went by that, pronounced "rah-CHEYL." When she started kindergarten, she started using "Rochelle." I think she dropped the "le" in high school. Her legal name has always been spelled "Rochel." In my lifetime, the only person who has ever pronounced it "rah-CHEYL" has been her older brother. Well, then and when someone calls me up to the Torah as "Chaya Merchavya Leah bat Michayel v'Rahcheyl"

Zadik says "Rohel" and so did Grandpa.

As for names: Aviva = way too close! As for the other names, I have some thoughts, but don't want you to steal them :)

I mentioned mom's older brother calling her that. I didn't realize that Grandpa did also.

Do you know when she dropped the LE

For your children's names, you mean? I won't steal your thoughts, but don't tell me anyway, just in case

I thought she adopted the "le" in middle school or high school and dropped it soon after graduating high school.

I like shoshanna and shira.. one of my friends is named shira, though we always call her she-ra, princess of power.

eee. See, I didn't think about that. Your friend might not mind it, but I need to think about cruel nicknames and such I guess.

Not a huge fan of Yair, could be because I know one and he's weird.

I met an Israeli named Xeve, thought that was neat.

Which is great if you want your kid's name spelled wrong every day for the rest of his life.

I had a good friend named Zulae. She always swore she'd give her kid a normal name because hers was such a constant pain in the ass.

So...how far in the family tree do you have to branch out before it becomes OK to repeat a name?

Well, I think we didn't name Melissa "Marcia" because of our great-aunt. But I'm not sure if it was because it was too close on the family tree, as you say, or if it was just because they didn't want a Matthew and Marcia in the same family since that was Aunt Marcia's husband's name. I think if they are still alive and in your tree linearly you shouldn't use the name. But I don't know about cousins, etc. For example even though my cousin is named Emily I think I could still name my child Emily or at least Emma without too many eyebrows raised, especially if they were both named after Evelyn. I think most families probably stay away from that anyway though just because of confusion.
