more from Darin.

The day after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Repent America issued a press release. In it, they implied that Hurricane Katrina was a judgement from God on New Orleans, particularly on Southern Decadence, New Orleans' annual queer end-of-summer bash.

Eh, they're just some tiny fringe group, right?

Well, Agape Press, the American Family Association's news service (and nobody can claim that the AFA isn't right in the heart of Christian activism) posted an article misleadingly titled New Orleans Residents: God's Mercy Evident in Katrina's Wake. They don't just imply.

The pastor explains that for years he has warned people that unless Christians in New Orleans took a strong stand against such things as local abortion clinics, the yearly Mardi Gras celebrations, and the annual event known as "Southern Decadence" -- an annual six-day "gay pride" event scheduled to be hosted by the city this week -- God's judgment would be felt.

“New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now," Shanks says. "God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again."

Last I checked, this isn't what Christianity is about. I thought Christianity wasn't about exploiting human suffering.

Show me that it's not. Take a stand.

The only problem I have with this is, once again, it seems to be a sweeping Generalization of All Christians.

Not all Christians are the same. Catholics differ from Protestants. Some churches, such as Pentecostal churches, differ from "Frozen Chosen" Churches. We all believe varying things, usually through translation, etc.

That being the case, you do get Fanatic groups that take an idea and run with it. I have never heard of the AFA, or any of the organizations you have mentioned. Possibly, because I do not go looking for them, but still, you cannot let them represent Christianity in General.

Pat Roberts also called for an assassination. Does that mean all Christians would like to see that? Does that mean his followers believe that?
Not Hardly. The less informed maybe.

The main point I am trying to make is that we all sin. Lying is just as bad as homosexuality (yes, I used it as a sin). No one town is better or worse, more or less deserving that any other.

Moreover, to quote the Bible: Luke 13

“1 There were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered thus? 3 I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Silo'am fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."”

The point is, everyone is a sinner, were all as bad as the next man. Salvation leads to lifetime with God, vs. being apart from God forever.

Just my view on the whole bit though.

I don't know how big the AFA is in Florida. They claim 2 million+ members nationwide, and they own a large radio station here in the Baltimore area.

Pat Robertson is arguably the best known Christian religious leader in the country. He collects millions of dollars in donations. If his followers don't agree with his calls for murdering an innocent man, why are they still following?

I see your point that not all Christians are like that. As good Muslims risk being tarred as terrorists by the actions of Al-Qaeda and Hamas, so do Christians risk being seen by the world as hate-mongering bigots like Robertson. Three cheers for the good and honest Christians (Catholic and Protestant, conservative and liberal) who have stood up against his corruption of the faith.
