My dad had a presentation last night at the Native Plant Society Meeting. It was disgusting and monsoony outside, so it was great that like 35 people came! He went through some history about the passion flower, and then more about it as it relates to the Madonna, and religious symbolism.
My dad has become a bit of the expert on this over the past few years, I think it's time for him to write a book. He actually discovered that a painting by Renaissance artist Joos van Cleve had been doctored approximately a hundred years later to add a passion flower. At the time it was originally painted, the passion flower was not known to exist. No one knew or realized this until my dad researched it, and now all the art historians are loving my daddy!
I'm not sure I've mentioned this before, so if you want to read more about it, my dad has the original story on his website, and another follow up story, and then one relating specifically to the kabbalah. Of course, now he's totally famous! Not that it takes that much to be famous on the internet, but that last link is to Joos van Cleve's Wikipedia. That's hardcore.
