Phone saga

So you guys remember the crazy saga with my phone, right?

Well, they finally admitted the Voyager had a problem, came out with the software. Never bothered to tell me of course. I got it updated last Wednesday.

But now I really want a BlackBerry. Vivi has one, Deborah has one, and now it's my turn. With me hanging out at the Verizon store, and both my sisters getting new BlackBerries (BlackBerries?) I've realized how much I want a more capable phone.

I called Verizon and cried/complained and they finally changed my contract date, which someone messed up when they gave me a new phone in June-- it was a manufacturer defect, so they should have never reset my date. But now it is fixed. Too bad my phone is still sucktard, but at least it doesn't turn off for fun now.

Anyway, for a fairly low cost I can upgrade my phone now. What do I want?

Blackberry Pearl (pink, duh) - the guy said this might not be good for me since I tend to take a lot of pictures and send a lot of text messages. The memory is not quite as high as the others

Blackberry Curve (pink, duh) - Nice, slightly bulkier, possibly about to be retired? If there's a new phone coming out soon I don't want to have an older phone

BlackBerry WorldPhone No camera. DENIED

Blackberry Storm - I love this phone, but wish it would open to have a REAL keyboard. I think I need a real keyboard.

BarackBerry - In a heartbeat, though only like 100 are being released :-P

Any blackberry owners should totally weigh in. I'm waiting for you lasunshine!

The keyboard on my touch is on the screen and it's not that bad at all. You just have to get used to it.

Get a Storm!!!

I have a Voyager now, so I have a touch screen. Honestly I love it, but I NEED my real keyboard. I never ever type anything of any length with my touch screen keyboard.

I've never been a fan of the Pearl. Then again, I still have a LG V (as in, the precursor to the enV) which I love aside from it's slight bulkiness. Maybe see if you can add a memory card to whichever phone you pick?

the memory card makes the pearl argument moot. Get it! it's so cute!

should I cut my hair super short too? huh? huh???

I need to see pictures of your new haircut :)

The guy also said there are problems with the phone deleting text messages sometimes, and that it is about to be taken off the market, that's why it's so cheap right now. I'm sure it's a really great phone (and really pretty!) but I think I like the Curve better. I need to hold them for size/weight.

deleting text messages, really? that sucks. good thing I don't text much. I agree you should go play with them at the store.

All the blackberries have a problem with deleting messages and call logs when memory gets full. Monitor your memory and it's not a problem.

I've been doing blackberry support for T-mobile for almost two years now. The Pearl's a good compact phone, and you can get really fast at one-thumb texting with that 2-per-key "sure type" system. I had one for a year before upgrading to the Curve 8320* because I liked the larger screen. Watch for the upcoming Curve 8900. It has built in GPS, wifi/UMA capability, 3.2MP camera and video, faster processor, and more memory.

holy crud. any chance you know when I should expect that to come out?

Feb 11th with T-mobile. I don't know when/if Verizon (*gasp* - I said the V-word!) will have it.

I'm on my 3rd BB. I had an older model, I had a pearl and I have a curve.
My opinions:

1. The pearl is small and cute and girly and still fits nicely in a purse.
2. The curve has a full keyboard which I love.
3. BB messenger is a great feature since it's instant messaging between bb owners and it's FREE!
4. The 'internet' is pretty much useless. I barely use it unless I'm ok with just a text headline of 'steelers win superbowl.'

I have AT&T so the Storm is not an option. I've heard it has some minor problems, but everything usually does the first time around.

I was going to upgrade to the Bold, but the keyboard is pretty chinzy. I'll keep the curve for as long as I can.

Hope this helps!

thank you!! I don't think I can get the Bold, I don't think Verizon offers it.

Doesn't the Pearl have a full keyboard? :(

The pearl has the sure type keyboard with 2 letters per key.
Feb. 2nd, 2009 07:18 pm (UTC)
Which is the best predictive text ever! You can get really fast with it.
Feb. 2nd, 2009 07:35 pm (UTC)
You really can type quite quickly with the Pearl's sure type keyboard. The predictive text is surprisingly good; also, it learns what you type most often and will add it to the predictive text memory.

Pearl has Suretype.
Bold is for AT&T only *coughcoughatthistimecoughcoughcough*

The Jevelin is a fantastic phone, somewhere in size between the Bold and Curve, though for the life of me I can't remember when it's available or who si going to have it, but it's what the Curve is being phased out for.

The Storm's keyboard will take a little bit of getting used too. I like it, a hell of a lot more than iPhone/Touch. The App store for the Storm is opening soon and will give you a lot of options for applications. Something to also note is that the storm has a removable memory card as well as built in. I will admit, the Roxio media player is fairly weak, but video looks good. If I were on Verizon I would probably have one.

Also note the Curve isn't obsolete, RIM has just been able to make things smaller, so enter the Javelin. Fairly similar machine stat wise, just not as bulky.

Blackberry Messenger definitely requires an internet plan on the account. It's "free" only if you have internet, which you would be paying for.
Feb. 2nd, 2009 07:24 pm (UTC)
I use the internet on my Curve all the time for checking news, weather, directions through BB Maps, looking up business phone numbers and addresses, movie times, etc., and keeping up on myspace and facebook correspondence. How can you say it's useless since you need it for BB Messenger and email?

What puzzles me is why people get blackberries and don't add the internet feature to the account. It becomes just a fancy phone - like getting a Hummer with a lawn-mower engine under the hood.
Feb. 2nd, 2009 07:49 pm (UTC)
No, I use it for that stuff too. I just meant that it's not like 'real internet.' Photos, lj, stuff like that. At least for me. Believe me, I use my bb every day for my job and my home life.

Also, I assumed since it was Melissa and we all know how Melissa loves the internet, that she would be getting the internet plan.

psssh. I hate the internet ;)

I'm having the same delemma, i upgraded last year to the EnV which i loved... Until one month later they came out with the Voyager :-(

I am eligible for my upgrande in the end of April and Verizon keeps sending me offers for free a free blackberry. I have been obsessing over the new phones... But with blackberry you have to purchase additional service inorder to full enjoy it! They have the new Samsung which is supposed to be the new IPhone, again though same service issue :-(

i love my full flip open Querty keyboard and not many others offer it... But the improved camera options on the new phones and additional capabilities have me drooling.
Feb. 2nd, 2009 06:16 pm (UTC)
The Voyager upgrading to the Blackberry (any of them) doesn't give me a better camera :( I thought the EnV had a 2.0 megapixel also?

I know I have to buy the extra service :( It sucks, but I want itttt.

Want the full low-down on Blackberry models? Pull up the info on www.blackberry.com. They tell you which models are carried by which carriers. Don't make the mistake of thinking "the Pearl" is all one model, ditto "the Curve" - there are lots of different models, with different features and capabilities.
