Ah, yes
I read it as the two males communicating, hence my comment on how it used to be "bros over hos", but now it's not.

Your explanation makes a lot more sense, now seeing that the speech bubble is actually linked to her, and not her male companion.

Looking at it superficially, one might guess that the man inviting her to come explore the future is an old childhood friend that she's abandoned for her new beau. Symbolically, I think you're right on. I can't even attempt say it better than you already have. …the representation of an idea. Marvelous.

It's also interesting how the bubbles are placed. Each says their own thing first and gets an answer later. It makes space/time more tricky in the comic.
