Suppose
"I suppose I will make a sandwich"
"She will be alright, I suppose"

Supposed
"But we were supposed to go to the mall"
"You were supposed to finish that assignment by Friday"

Chances are, if you are saying "suppose to" -- you are WRONG.

Use
"Can I use your toothpaste?" (this has a 'hard' s.. like a z)
"That restroom is not for public use" (this has a 'soft' s)

Used
"I used to go to that elementary school"
"We used bleach on our stained sheets"

"Used" happened in the PAST.

Chances are, if you are saying "use to" as a way to talk about something you are no longer doing-- you are WRONG.

I could care less if baby Jesus cries. Babies cry ALL time.

Improper grammar makes ME cry.

Many people understand these concepts, but that doesn't mean that incorrect slang doesn't slip into language, especially if people are just pounding out quick entries into their journals.

What's prompting the belittling?

the belittling was prompted by persons at my job being unable to use words correctly.

90% of the people I meet in this town have horrible grammar... obviously it's not the schooling because you had to have learned it somewhere.

You should have pointed out the difference between there, their, and they're too.

And that it's night, not nite... that one drives me insane!

I'm not helping am I?

I always associate "nite" with children's books. Am I wrong in remembering that "nite" is/was frequently used in children's books?

Ah yes, you're probably right. I was still reading children's books during my twelve year old stage (blame it on my sisters).

Yes I can see how you can associate it with childrens books, the spelling nite was established in 1931 as a simplified spelling of night.
