I feel like I should make some sort of obligatory 9/11 post.

So I guess this is it.

Posting pictures of the Twin Towers blowing up might help us remember.

But I'm not for remembering for the sake of remembering.

Time to make a change, America.
Last year's post. More memory-ish

Amen! I get so sick of us "remembering" this day. If it's such an important day, I have an idea. Let's go the pro sports route. Let's "retire" September 11th forever. Let's "remove" it from the month of September so that it is always honored. No 9/11 can ever be as important as 9/11/2001 ever again. September should go from 9/1 to 9/31, with for example yesterday having been Monday 9/10 and today being Tuesday 9/12.

Build the memorial and let's move ON! 9/11 happens EVERY YEAR. It's no longer news.

now that would be confusing.

Maybe, but the annoyance of dealing with that wouldn't come close to the annoyance of being continually reminded of the most tragic day in US history.

Those who lost people will ALWAYS remember. The rest of us have spent the past 6 years trying to forget. To me, the nation's requirement in remembering is to have the memorial built, and maybe when 9/11 quietly works its way back, to spend a second in thought.

We can stop dedicating half the nightly news to it.

100% agreed. Then again, my advisor refers to it only as "The day that the planes hit the buildings" refusing to ever use 9/11.

not to be argumentative but...
Why bother making the "obligatory" post? I'm not against remembering an event where a lot of people died; I'm just against remembering this particular event when there have been other instances where lots of people died. What makes 2,750 more special than the thousands that die in Darfur?

I don't think we need pictures to help us remember. We are constantly reminded of what happened on September 11, 2001. It runs through our lives. It dominates domestic and foreign policy.

I think it's time for a change. I think one of the best things we could do is stop calling it "9/11". Stop giving a nickname to a horrific event. Stop acting like we're in awe of the government's response. Stop backing down as politicians take away our civil liberties. Because if we don't, all "9/11" will stand for is the day Americans decided their civil liberties and freedom weren't worth fighting for anymore.
