MyLot

I've gotten addicted to Yahoo!Answers lately. But why do Yahoo!Answers, when you can join MyLot and get paid for the exact same thing?

These guys look...odd. I can see why they'd want to reward users for, say, the next six months, if they're trying to build up a critical mass to become the next Yahoo Groups or Myspace or whatever. And the recruitment scheme of getting extra cash for bringing in new people fits there as well. But what about the long term. They can't imagine that they'll have enough money to outbid Myspace, etc. indefinitely?

From the site:

"How do I calculate my earnings? Discussion activity earnings are calculated based on a proprietary model that rewards useful responses and relevant discussions. "

I wonder how good their model is? i.e. how do they identify users whose posts are good enough at attracting other users (and thus advertisers) that it's worth paying them to participate. If they've actually found a good way of rewarding useful comments and filtering out spam, then they may be onto something. Or their vague explanation might just be there to drum up hope and elitism among their users:)

Re: MyLot
Thats very true. <lj user='lasunshine"> has earned money on there, as have her friends. The place is covered in ads, presumably how they get their money. I have no idea how they decide who gets what. I just joined today, and they only calculate earnings every 24 hours. Tomorrow morning I shall be very excited to see my new total. If nothing, I was less bored for a day. If there's money in there, that's lunch.
